Okay, so this book had been everywhere on all media and I have read so many reviews and I don’t really want to review it. Because I just don’t and this took me forever to post, and I don’t have much to say, but here we go anyway…

I didn’t get all emotional over this book but that is not to say I don’t like it. I think this book was beautifully written and as my sisters says, very ‘quote worthy’. Its true there are so many quote moments it’s just not funny. In fact I could fill this entire blog for pages just with quotes.. in fact I will try to put some in just to prove to you the quote issue exists.

But it has more than quotes, it has finesse and elegance and complete control over every facet of the story. For YA genre you don’t usually get this standard of writing and I think that’s why it has been so successful. And great for the promotion of the YA genre!
Not only that, but is a beautiful illustration of the unfairness of life. Of the fact that we aren’t and life isn’t that special, and making a big a splash doesn’t really change that.

I really love the honesty of the story. Despite being a fiction novel, Green really tries to portray the events with integrity.
….Although I never have met two teenagers who speak so eloquently and are so well read. But then again I’ve never met two dying teenagers and maybe eloquence is the fort of the dying.

The only really issue I had with this book is that it was ultimately a love story and I didn’t really feel how big their love was. The characters quoted having a Great love. What is great love anyway? and how can you possibly know when you are so young what great love is? or maybe love is for the young and that how you know its great? Or maybe their love was just normal love and we love to idealize the notion of love. Therefore the reason I didn’t connect with their love is because it was just normal love, not fictional love.
But whichever way you look at it… I didn’t get it, I didn’t feel it, and at the end I felt a little empty because I felt like it was missing.
I know, shock horror. But that the truth. There were pretty quotes, but besides the prettiness, I didn’t see the love. Maybe I read it backwards?

Apart from the love. It was slightly depressing. I felt when picking it up after a break, that I was getting sucked into a dark and desperate place. Which by no means a bad thing, but if you aren’t in the mood for sad, or can’t handle sad, maybe it’s worth cautioning against it.
However, It wouldn’t be fair to not point out that there are some hilarious moments!!! ie. when they talk about Augustus’s driving totally had me in stitches. So while it is sad, there are some really funny moments.

To be truthful, I don’t have all that much to say about this book. It was a great story, if not a little depressing. I think the majority of people would take enjoyment from reading it therefore I would recommend this book to anyone.
Young or old. Healthy or dying.

Worth reading. If only for the quotes 😉
