As promised ‘Bitter Sweet Love’
The author of this lovely little novella is Jennifer L. Armentrout. Some of you may know her from the very well-known ‘Lux series’. If you haven’t read it, and aliens are you thing, hit those babies up, you’re in for a treat.
Bitter Sweet Love is a prequel to the series Dark Elements. It’s a short and sweet romance novel, about a girl named Jas and a guy named Dez. Its perfect from the beginning, you can’t disagree! Here is the blurb..
“Dez wasn’t just Jasmine’s crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil.He was her everything, right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn’t help that Jas’s father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.
And now he’s back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn’t taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…
I’ve read some reviews that disagree, but I think the whole gargoyle thing is great! It’s creative and interesting, and something you don’t see in the fantasy world that often.
It’s a play between good and evil. Usually that means Demons and Angels. So it’s nice to read something out of the box.
I think one of the hardest things about writing and fiction, is that so much of it has been done already- especially in romance. It’s hard to come up with something really original. So I applaud this. I guess it isn’t the most romantic creature, but she does it well and they do have human forms.

The story line primary focuses on Jas and Dez. However you meet a number of other characters. A few of these character will become main character in the next book. Meeting them from Jas point of view definitely creates a good amount of anticipation for the next book. I just know I am going to love them!
The book cover a lot of back story about the demon and warden world, their expectations, customs and traditions. Part of aim in this novel is to set up the play ground for the “Dark Elements” series, and Armentrout does this very well.
As for Jas and Dez story line: There isn’t too much out of the box here. As I said it’s a romance novel, and follows the formula of one… set it up, make it clash, resolve it and end it with a kiss or more 😉
Don’t worry parents.. It is a PG novella, but with some great lovey-dovey quotes. My personal fav…
“I loved you the night you brought me pudding and stayed with me until I fell asleep. That was eleven years ago and my love for you has never faded, Jas. Not for one second.”
When you bring pudding into the room, AND give it to me, of course its eternal love! The greatest gift is food.. anyone with me?
The book is a very light, entertaining read, but has just enough spunk and flirt to zoom to you the finish line. If you’re going to be waiting in line for a few hours or like me, most likely waiting backstage for a few hours… it’s a great way to pass the hours.
Plus, it wont break your heart, or leave you emotionally scared.
It will fill you with its own special glow though.
(and some great cheesy lines, Boyfriends take note 😉 )
